Sensitivity is a big buzz word in the beauty industry at the moment and increasingly more and more people are developing reactions to products and treatments. *sad face*. You’ll be all clued up if you saw our previous post all about the rise of HEMA (catch up, here) but sometimes it may not be an ingredient that’s causing your sensitivity.

First things first…
One of the most common areas for increased sensitivity is, you’ve guessed it, your cuticles. Let’s hop back to beauty-school for just a moment. The cuticle is a layer of clear skin located along the bottom edge of your finger or toe protecting the area known as the nail bed. Its main function is to protect new nails from bacteria and damage when they grow out from the nail root.
As you can imagine, the area around the cuticle is delicate. It can get dry, damaged (by improper removal techniques) and infected (hygiene, hygiene, hygiene!). All of these are possible causes of sensitivity so if you’re experiencing dryness or flaking, pain or signs of infection either during or after your manicure then you might need to reevaluate what you’re using.
What could be the problem?
If you’re experiencing sensitive cuticles then it's important to look at both how you’re removing them (your technique) and what you’re using to remove them (your tools). To safely remove your cuticle you need to go gently. Using a cuticle pusher carefully push back the cuticle along the nail bed, trimming any excess skin as you go. If you’re technique is on point then it’s time to look at your tools.
